The Education component of AASLA has been revived over the past two years in order to provide our membership with the opportunity to complete their educational requirements for the Land Agent Regulations, expand their personal education, and to complete requirements for other industry designations. In 2008, our association provided seminars in Negotiations, Contract Law, Ethics, Preparing for the SRB, and the Saskatchewan Land Titles system. To date in 2009, your association has provided the following for our membership:
 
January 16th, 2009 - Mr. Bruce Barry, B.A., LL.B. presented a full day seminar entitled "Fiduciary Duties and the Surface Land Agent" which examined in a practical fashion, the fiduciary duty with regard to the Land Agents Licensing Act, and the Land Agents Licensing Regulation.
(Members Cost: $200 Non-Member Costs: $250)
 
February 27th, 2009 - Mr. Gary Lepine presented a half day seminar entitled "Introduction to Professional Ethics" This course is an introduction to ethics and the ethical decision-making process. It focuses on the role of ethics in both personal and professional life as well using some case studies and other tools for practical application. (Members Cost: $200 Non-Member Costs: $250)
 
April 24th, 2009 - Mr. Gary McDougall with Conflict Solutions presented a full day seminar entitled "Dealing with Difficult People" and provided specific training in the area of strategies for defusing angry and dealing with verbally aggressive people. This training has a direct application to anyone who works in Land and Conflict Solutions has delivered this session to a number of other Surface Land groups.
(Members Cost: $200 Non-Member Costs: $300)
 
June 11th, 2009 - This will be a full day educational seminar including presentations on the newly introduced Land-use Framework from the Province of Alberta, the Olds College Energy and Utilities Sector Relations, as well as a Panel Discussion on Pipeline Rentals in the Province of Alberta. More detailed information is included on this site.
(Members Cost: $200 Non-Member Costs: $300)

November 9th, 2009 - Mr. Robert Laboucane with Ripple Effects presented a full day seminar - Aboriginal Awareness Training.  This program has been designed to create greater understanding and enhance communications between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people.  It serves as a tool for gaining awareness and understanding of a group of people who, through historical events, location, law, legislation and policies have remained separated, isolated, segregated and marginalized from mainstream society.                                (Members Cost: $300 Non-Member Cost: $350)

December 10th, 2009 - Mrs. Heidi Meldrum with Parlee McLaws LLP will present a full day seminar - Preparing for Surface Rights Board Hearings.  This course will begin by covering the types of surface rights board hearings, including compensation, rent review, damage claims and back rent.  The next section will focus on the structure of the hearing and deal with procedural elements, evidence taken under oath, direct and cross examination of witnesses and questions from the board.  From there the course will focus on evidentiary issues like the burden of proof and discuss privacy issues before closing by discussing the orders ultimately issued by the board.                                                                                                                                         (Members Cost $150 Non-Member Cost: $200)
 
Educational seminar/course updates will be posted as they become available. AASLA will continue to provide our membership with what they need to be efficient, effective and educated members in our industry.
